Construction proceeds apace downtown. Susan and I walked downtown (with Sophie) early Saturday to see how the newly-re-opened first block looked, do a little local shopping, and to gander at the farmers' market on its first open weekend (and buy a few odds and ends there, and downtown, too).*

...

The Mumpsimus Blog - Another attack of UAS

UAS, in ukespeak, stands for Ukulele Acquisition Syndrome. It's a disease that afflicts many ukulele aficionados and drives them to want to own every ukulele they see. It appears to be spread through Web sites and forums that cater to the uke.

...

Councillor McNabb had no idea there even was one, and even had to get up in the middle of the meeting to go outside to look for a copy so he could follow along with my comments.

...

Haven't done a lot of Web-related work the last few years and I was rusty. I was struggling with some of the CSS elements, trying to remember how they worked and getting a little frustrated.

Decided the best way I could relearn those skills and hone my design talents was to remake on of my pages that has long need an upgrade: my ukulele page. Now it's gone from one long, sprawling ramble to a tighter, section-oriented, multi-page, CSS-driven site. Yes, it has tables too, and I remain a firm believer that tables work just fine with CSS.

You can see the new site at www.ianchadwick.com/ukuleles/index.htm...

This council is far more willing - even seeming eager at times - to meet behind closed doors than any other council I've watched or been part of. I thought we should try, just once, to be more open, when the issue offered us that opportunity.

While I cannot break my oath and reveal the subject of the meeting, I can comment on why I didn't believe it was appropriate.

First, the subject of the discussion and the individual named in the report have already...

For fear of beating an old drum, I am going to revisit the Multi-Use Recreation Facility issues. We all remember the fiasco that befell this town when they let a large super build fund slip away because they couldn't make a decision about how and when to spend it when it came to designing a proper recreation facility. I guess in light of that debacle, the town has to decide to waste money by placing bandaid solutions to the recreation deficiencies, all over town. The first coming by way of a non-competitive pool being built by the YMCA, funded in part by a 1.5M gift from the Town. To understand why this is such a bad idea I have attached a letter detailing the inadequacies of this project.

Secondly, $900,000 has been allocated to...

It was small, relatively inexpensive, and with only four strings it was relatively easy to play. It was charming and not intimidating. Men and women played it equally.

Tens of thousands of ukes were sold in that period. Maybe even millions - no one really knows. And to cater to that market, most song books and song sheets of the era had uke chord diagrams in them.

Although they had originated three decades earlier, ukuleles...

Shouldn't it be in a neutral country? The match organizers seem rather biased.

As a prime example of their bias, Anand was stranded in Frankfurt when all air travel was disrupted by the volcanic ash emissions from Eyjafjallajökull...
